“Politics” a dirty word?

"Jenn I can't believe you post about your politics and beliefs when you own a business. I thought I was supposed to stay away from politics and religion on social media."

One of the top things I get asked (outside of when is the best time to post) is about religion and politics - especially in the current environment.

Here's my short answer: If I ask you, what beliefs do you have that you are willing to lose business over? What would you say? THOSE are the things I believe you not only can, but actually should post about. To me that means they are part of your core beliefs and therefore a core part of who are. People have been sold to since the day they were born. They want to know who the people are behind the businesses they support.

Could you lose some potential business? Absolutely. You could lose the business of those with opposing views and those who are anti-anything political or religious.

I say, so what? There is plenty of business for everyone. And wouldn't you rather work with people who either 1. Align with your core values or 2. Respect you and your service or product so much that they don't hesitate to look past your opposing views? I say hell yeah.

There are those that will say wait until your business is strong enough to support this kind of mind set. I say start now. Why wait to build a clientele (and amazing relationships) with the kind of people I mentioned above? I have used this mindset from day 1. Because of it, I have a huge referral network. I have clients/customers who have followed me to whatever I am pursuing. They trust me to be my true, authentic self and to therefore encourage them to be true and authentic with me.

"But Jenn, nothing comes to mind." Awesome! That is 1000% okay. There are plenty of non-political and non-religious things about YOU that will attract the people you want to work with and deter those you don't.

So I challenge you to take a look inside yourself and decide what are those things worth "losing" business over?
